For eight years, white supremacist Matthew Hale has been fighting his conviction for soliciting the murder of a federal judge. This week, a federal appeals court decisively rejected every argument he raised.



Lady Gaga promoter sues to collect on terrorism insurance policy

Concert promoter Live Nation has sued syndicates of insurer Lloyd's of London for their "despicable conduct" in refusing to cover losses stemming from a performance by Lady Gaga in Indonesia that was canceled last year after the pop star received threats from an Islamic terrorist group.



University of Chicago lands Fitzgerald for teaching job

Patrick Fitzgerald, the high-profile former U.S. attorney, is heading to the University of Chicago Law School. He has been named the inaugural Feirson Distinguished Lecturer at the school and will teach one course per year, beginning with a national security law program this spring.

GOP senators again block Halligan nomination to D.C. Circuit

Republicans once again blocked the nomination of Caitlin Halligan to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit on Wednesday, calling into question whether she might ever get a confirmation vote.



Former state high court judge named dean at Saint Louis Law

Just one day after interim dean Tom Keefe announced he was leaving, the University of Saint Louis School of Law announced on March 5 that former Supreme Court of Missouri Judge Michael Wolff would assume the deanship, effective immediately.

Wyrick Robbins acquires financial services law firm

Wyrick Robbins Yates & Ponton, a 73-attorney law firm based in Raleigh, N.C., has acquired a four-lawyer shop focusing on financial services clients.



Daily D.C. Lateral Roundup: Schiff Hardin

Two attorneys from Cozen O'Connor, Ralph De Martino and Alec Orudjev, have joined Schiff Hardin's Washington office as partners in the corporate and securities group. Cavas Pavri, who will practice primarily out of the firm's Philadelphia office as a partner, also made the jump.

Intellectual property verdicts represented the largest category in number and dollar value last year. The category has contributed one verdict higher than $1 billion in each of the three prior years. But this year's list of top verdicts was notable in that three verdicts reached the $1 billion mark or higher, and all of them came out of high-stakes trials.
