Judicial conference official warns of budget cuts' 'painful' effects on courts

Congress needs to restore funding to the federal court system or risk problems like lengthy case delays, inadequate counsel for criminal defendants and reduced safety at courthouses, an official with the Judicial Conference of the United States told a congressional panel March 20.



Washington Post Co. defeats securities fraud claims involving Kaplan

A federal judge in D.C. has dismissed a securities fraud lawsuit against the Washington Post Company, finding that the plaintiffs failed to sufficiently allege that executives intended to deceive the market about the financial health of for-profit education subsidiary Kaplan Inc.



ABA panel endorses continued use of LSAT in law school admissions

The American Bar Association's Standards Review Committee, which has been evaluating the law school accreditation standards, caused a stir in 2011 when some members advocated dropping the requirement that schools use a "valid and reliable admission test"—in practice, the LSAT.

Court upholds all but two counts against Chinese nationals for weapons export violations

A federal appeals court has upheld most counts against two Chinese nationals convicted of breaking U.S. laws concerning overseas shipment of weapons-grade technologies. But it reversed two counts each for exporting items restricted under the U.S. Munitions List, and remanded the cases for resentencing on all counts.
