Judge Warns Federal Cuts Will 'Strike at the Heart' of Judiciary

Speaking today at the Judicial Conference's biannual meeting in Washington, U.S. District Judge Julia Gibbons warned that sequestration -- mandatory budget cuts that went into effect March 1 -- put the federal judiciary "in uncharted territory," according to a release from the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts.

Convicted Lobbyist Asks Full D.C. Circuit to Review Prosecution

Earlier this year, in upholding the conviction of prominent former lobbyist Kevin Ring, a federal appeals court in Washington called the distinction between legal lobbying and criminal conduct "subtle." The court went on to say that the line "spells the difference between honest politics and criminal corruption."

Jury Finds District of Columbia Not Liable for Overdetentions at D.C. Jail

A Washington federal jury this week found that inmates were unconstitutionally overdetained at the D.C. Jail between 2007 and 2008, but that the District of Columbia government wasn't liable because they didn't find evidence of "deliberate indifference" to the inmates' rights.
