AFTERNOON UPDATE Judge Warns Federal Cuts Will 'Strike at the Heart' of JudiciarySpeaking today at the Judicial Conference's biannual meeting in Washington, U.S. District Judge Julia Gibbons warned that sequestration -- mandatory budget cuts that went into effect March 1 -- put the federal judiciary "in uncharted territory," according to a release from the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. Convicted Lobbyist Asks Full D.C. Circuit to Review ProsecutionEarlier this year, in upholding the conviction of prominent former lobbyist Kevin Ring, a federal appeals court in Washington called the distinction between legal lobbying and criminal conduct "subtle." The court went on to say that the line "spells the difference between honest politics and criminal corruption."
