The 100 Most Influential Lawyers

These 100 lawyers have shaped the legal world through their work in the courtroom, at the negotiating table, in the classroom or government. They have taken on major legal battles, orchestrated the biggest corporate deals, tackled unpopular causes and helped run giant international companies.

Prop. 8 opponents seek broad ruling, not just for California

The historic constitutional test of gay marriage rights unfolds on March 26, when the U.S. Supreme Court takes up California's same-sex marriage ban, a case in which opponents to the ban seek not a narrow victory, but full participation by gay couples in the fundamental right to marry.

DOMA fight raises question: Is it time to change course?

As the U.S. Supreme Court takes up the issue in the case of U.S. v. Windsor March 27, it is faced with dozens of briefs from groups of former military officials, intelligence officers and even a bankruptcy judge among others urging it to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act. The question is whether the justices — and especially Anthony Kennedy — will agree that the time has come to change course.

Parties duel over recusal issue

Dueling briefs before the U.S. Supreme Court in the Proposition 8 case Hollingsworth v. Perry have revived the debate over whether two California federal judges involved in the case at earlier stages should have recused themselves.
