The U.S. Department of Justice has taken the rare step of intervening in a civil rights dispute in Maryland, arguing that a photographer's recording of police activity in public was constitutionally protected conduct.



Saint Louis' interim dean resigns under fire

The Saint Louis University School of Law is caught up in administrative turmoil for the second time in eight months. Interim dean Tom Keefe resigned abruptly on March 4, citing his habit of making inappropriate comments and a fraught relationship with the faculty.

On March 4, the state's high court ruled that North American Corp. intruded upon the privacy of former company saleswoman Kathleen Lawlor when it hired investigators to find out whether she had poached its clients after she switched jobs.



Government relents on halfway house for litigator

Trial attorney Pierce O'Donnell will serve the remaining three months of his prison sentence at his Santa Barbara, Calif., home under an agreement with federal prosecutors.

Intellectual property verdicts represented the largest category in number and dollar value last year. The category has contributed one verdict higher than $1 billion in each of the three prior years. But this year's list of top verdicts was notable in that three verdicts reached the $1 billion mark or higher, and all of them came out of high-stakes trials.
