Lawyers for BP's U.S. subsidiaries have asked the trial judge to halt payout of Deepwater Horizon oil spill claims under its $7.8 billion settlement, citing potentially billions of dollars in "absurd windfalls" to businesses with fictitious losses.

Supreme Court to make audio recordings of same-sex arguments available

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday announced it will make audio recordings of next week's same-sex marriage arguments available for same-day access from its website. The court said it will post the audio recordings and the unofficial transcripts as soon as the digital files are available for uploading.

Plaintiffs' lawyers in proposed class actions cannot avoid federal courts by promising to seek less than $5 million in damages, according to a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday.
