A federal judge has signed off on a large portion of a class action brought on behalf of certain investors in BP PLC shares who sued the company and its senior executives for alleged securities fraud related to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Court rejects trade secret theft sentences, finding leniency 'unreasonable'

A federal appeals court has overturned two men's sentences for stealing trade secrets from the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and remanded the case, questioning the leniency of the punishment.



O'Donnell cites health problems in plea to avoid halfway house

Trial attorney Pierce O'Donnell has asked a federal judge to change his prison sentence so that he can serve three months at his Santa Barbara, Calif., home, rather than at a halfway house.



New York State Bar Association calls on ABA to oppose cuts to federal courts, LSC

The federal judiciary and the Legal Services Corp. continue to find themselves threatened by cuts that will significantly harm the federal court system and legal assistance programs for the poor. The New York State Bar Association urges the ABA to speak out and condemn these cuts.

One of the most common complaints about the U.S. patent system is that inventors are claiming ownership of basic, widely understood ideas. No doubt aware of these criticisms, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has agreed to revisit its definition of patent-eligible subject matter in an upcoming case.
