The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was dealt a devastating—if indirect—blow last week, when the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled that three recess appointments to the National Labor Relations Board were invalid.

Former Michigan Supreme Court justice pleads guilty to fraud

Diane Hathaway was charged on January 18 with hiding assets to qualify for mortgage-debt relief on a home she and her husband owned in Gross Pointe, Mich. She faces up to 18 months in jail.

Lawyer gets home confinement for failing to report boss's mortgage fraud

On January 28, Chief Judge Patti Saris of the District of Massachusetts sentenced Sean Robbins, 39, who now lives in New York, to eight months of home confinement as part of three years of probation. Saris also ordered Robbins to pay $300,000 in restitution.



Judge approves $4 billion criminal plea over BP oil spill

A federal judge in New Orleans has accepted BP's $4 billion criminal guilty plea over its role in the catastrophic 2010 oil spill that fouled the Gulf of Mexico. But BP's lawyers still have plenty of work to do managing the company's massive liabilities over the disaster.
